As a golfer of modest ability, I found Akarana challenging .. with a "slope" of 121 it was never going to be easy, but I fell foul of water hazards (ball losses) & the gradient suprised me .. VERY attractive & meticulously maintained, but it was a gusty day, & the fast greens compounded with blustery conditions made putting pretty tough .. on the second, the slope & prevailing wind simply blew the ball back down the green/fairway ,, just would not remain stationery (we picked up eventually) .. but will certainly return as it's a classy course (& I want to improve my abysmal performance)
Wanted to hit off earlier on a Sat. morning, but on phoning on the Friday the course superintendent casually said "I'll be there about quarter to eight". As we needed to hire a set of clubs ($35 for good set of new Wilsons), I accepted. There's no pro-shop, but they sell balls, gloves, etc, but i didn't see a cart on the course. The women's club champs were on so he sent us, as a two, off the 10th. He was very welcoming and accommodating.
A lot of holes are straight, but the course was interesting and in very good condition. The greens are small, but cleverly shaped.
Worth a visit and, from what I've heard, the best course in the area.
As I arrived at the course at dawn on a May Friday morning, I was the only one there, so my 1 ratings were in regard to the place being locked up, but no problem walking on and using the honesty box (there was still no-one there at 9am). The course condition was great for a back-block country track, although they'd sprayed a selective herbicide on the first 4 fairways for flatweed and it had left a lot of baron spots on them, but I just took preferred lies.
The design is quite clever using natural water courses, undulating fairways and small greens and is no pushover.
It has 12 standalone holes and 6 repeats to make up the 18. $15.00 green fee.
Definitely worth a whack if you're in the area.
The Rotorua Golf Course was excellent to play on, we loved seeing the thermal activity around the course and the people were friendly too. Location is great as really close to town and all the hotels and motels in Rotorua.
A public facility & as such the "flow" of play can be erratic .. school holiday groups etc can make for a 5hr+ round, but on quieter days a pleasant "no-frills" course .. suprisingly attractive given its locale, but
the 19th is a strictly non-alcoholic cafeteria. Not for purist golfers, but an adequate course for try-hards like myself
What a little gem this course proved to be .. from Auckland was a 45 minute drive but well worth the trip
.. a well manicured course, challenging greens (in top-notch condition), friendly reception & scenic. Will
certainly visit again
Only played the front 9 late afternoon, mid-week and the greens had just been cored. The first four holes were a little basic, but the last 5 were well designed and challenging. Course condition was good.
Magnificent golf course that was very welcoming of an overseas visitor. Played mid-week, so had no trouble getting on.
Not a great Winter course (not many are!) but scenic & enjoyable. A good work-out for those in match condition .. a cart worth consideration for those that are not. The second half of the back 9 especially enjoyable, and the final climb to the 19th is a strategic thirst-maker .. very happy to return
To be fair it was Winter, but the Tee markers weren't apparent (in storage?) & as a visiting player, it was confusing trying to negotiate the course. Several fairways were hopelessly wet & open to debate whether the course should have been closed .. proved an extremely disappointing day after a significant trek to an isolated location
